Making Time For Prayer

Confession: I’ve known Wonder Woman since high school and she’s come to my rescue more times than I can remember.

I’m struggling with my New Year’s goals, and it’s only the third week in January.

So I asked my hero for advice.

“Wonder Woman” in my life is a working single mom and grandma, a true super heroine. She’s active, always on the run, and her faith is rock-solid. Time is one of her rarest resources, yet she finds the time for prayer and Bible plans.

Yes, that’s right, Wonder Woman is my accountability partner!

Between jobs, family, school and church activities and the general business of adulting, she’s prioritized prayer by being intentional.

When it’s quiet and the rush of the day hasn’t started yet, she’s in her war room. Maybe you’ve heard of a prayer room or area, and we’ll talk about that another time, but Wonder Woman has a war room. Of course.

She’s not perfect. She has to set a several alarms because she’s not an early riser. (After all, she’s out there making the world a better place.)

Evening is also a great time to pause, unwind and meditate too, she says. “If we can binge-watch shows, we can binge on Bible reading and prayer,” she says.

Amen to that, Wonder Woman!

I’ve been reading Henry Cloud’s Boundaries and slowly realizing that the priorities and goals that truly matter to me mostly hinge on how I use one of my rarest resources: Time.

Personal truth for me: If I want to be nearer to God, I need to invest the time in prayer and reading God’s Word. If I want results, I have to schedule the time and persevere against my urge to stay in bed, read the news on my phone, etc.

If, like me, you’re also struggling with making time for prayer and Bible study, here’s a song to meditate on:

New Today by Micah Tyler

I crave an unrushed experience with God, with ample time to worship and write in my prayer journal.

Lord, you are the first and the last and go before us. Please direct our steps and help us make time for the right things and say no to the things that distract or detour us from experiencing you. Amen.
