Picker’s Report, Part 2

Totally pinning this to my Biergarten board for a maybe someday project. Spotted at The Painted Tree, Highland Village.

It was a busy weekend at The Joy & Gladness, where the prospect of finding water damage at The Joy Store’s Bowie Trade Days location was looming.

So we went west.

Unfortunately, a recent tornado in Bowie left a trail of damage, including many homes and businesses. Our spot is high and dry, so we’re on for next weekend, and we’re wishing the best for our friends in Bowie.

Got Milk Glass?

Milk glass egg platter edged in gold gilt.

Almost two hours from home, we didn’t want to waste our trip. Asking around, a friend pointed us to a vintage hotspot in town, and her tip didn’t disappoint.

You know from a previous picker report that I enjoy the hunt for oldies but goodies so I wanted to look around and hopefully justify the drive.

It was hot, dusty and not as socially distant as I would have liked. These are the things I do for antiques.

Immediately I spotted a petite footstool outside that needs a good home. Self-control! Must. Not. Add. To. The. Garage.

Sometimes I pick up pieces for collectors and often a few for myself, so I was already looking around for milk glass. Admittedly I purchased this plate last week for a friend, so I happy to find this piece at a price where I can add it to my booth at The Antique Gallery in Lewisville. So that makes three egg plates in as many weeks. It’s a thing, I guess. Actually, make that four. Keep reading …

Why do I love old dishes? It’s the little details. I mean, check the backside of this platter:

Big ❤️ For Mini Dishes

Speaking of little details, this cut-glass children’s creamer and sugar won over my penny-pinching heart.

Two sets are heading to my booth. Maybe. Or one. It’s hard to say. L👀k at these tiny handles!

My eagle eye also spied a trio of teensy cups so of course I had to add these to my growing miniature collection. For the antiques booth, of course.

Crazy For Carnival Glass

Found! It looks like a peacock, am I right? Pretty and pristine, this blue carnival-glass relish and egg platter is a-coming home.

I was able to talk myself into not keeping the milk glass egg plate because I swooned over this hard-to-find blue carnival glass platter.

In fact, It’s gonna look luminous near my fruit bowl:

Anyway.

Next up, I noticed this candy dish, so it joined the growing “hold” pile up front. Someone’s Grandma kept this out of reach and behind glass, I’m certain, based on how destructive we were as kids.

Side note — all of this iridescent blue coordinates nicely with Coach’s Oil Slick collection from several seasons ago. Maybe I have a matching tote, maybe I don’t. (And a tiny purse too.)

Coming Up Roses

What we like: Mixing old and new florals, so yeah, add it to my pile!

I forgot one of my own antiquing rules and only had a few singles in my wallet.

Always bring cash, dear readers:

  • Because someday you’ll wind up finding something you love and it’s a cash and carry place
  • So you’ll have to trust someone to hold your merch while you hunt for an ATM that may be a few miles away
  • And said ATM will charge $4+ in service fees inside a store that’s so grease-filled that you’ll need a shower later.

By the time I found the oval rose platter, a trip to the ATM was clearly in my future so might as well keep shopping.

Because pink Depression glass + roses belong together:

Pairs nicely with pink glass I already have at home the booth.

Back to the roses, this gold and white rose plate also went home straight to the booth wall.

So tempting to take home. We like the power of threes so these two lattice-trimmed plates are now on the booth wall too.

Spotted hiding in a dark corner, these lovely illustrated patterns seemed too good to pass up. A quick text to our fashionista friend Angelique confirmed that this vintage duster-dress McCall’s pattern is one of the few she doesn’t have. Score!

Check out those gloves and hats! This Simplicity pattern now lives with our mannequin-muse Grace at the antique mall.

Hands full, the hunt continued. Last week, I purchased a type-setter tray destined to become a friend’s new table. So serendipity struck when I found a mystery jar that included wood type blocks.

Pretty sure she’s going to say yes to the press.

And a metal Kodak film canister.

I was hoping for a roll of mystery film inside, but just as well — no more Foto Huts to drop off and pick up in an hour.

Finally, the line was long and it was time to leave, so walking up to the register, I snagged this glass hen, which I love in all colors, similar to how I love egg platters.

And, at the last minute, I retrieved the footstool too.

Mission accomplished, most of these goodies went straight to my booth. But next weekend is another story …
